The Wildlife Garden

Help bees, birds and hedgehogs in any size garden

You don't need a big garden or a wild one to help wildlife. A few well-chosen plants, a dish of water and a gap under the fence make a real difference. This guide starts with ten easy ideas, then covers flowers for pollinators through the year, birds, hedgehogs, a mini pond and a slightly less tidy way of gardening.

Five easy ways to start

  1. Make a hedgehog gap: a 13cm hole in the bottom of a fence lets hedgehogs travel between gardens.
  2. Leave some seed heads: cut back in early spring, not autumn, so birds can feed and insects can shelter.
  3. Stop using pesticides: sprays and pellets kill the insects and creatures that keep pests in check.
  4. Let some grass grow: a patch of longer grass, mown once or twice a year, is full of life.
  5. Put up a nest box: up by mid-February, out of strong sun and away from feeders.

The full guide has all ten, plus flowers for every month and a step-by-step mini pond.

Questions and answers

No. Most ideas work in a small garden, and some on a balcony: a few pots of flowers for bees, a dish of water and a nest box all help.
