Plant this autumn for colour from February to June
Spring bulbs are the easiest way to fill a garden with colour: plant them once in autumn, and many come back every year. This guide shows you when and how deep to plant, how to make a layered bulb pot that flowers for months, and what to do after flowering so they come back.

Plant most bulbs two to three times as deep as the bulb is tall. Too shallow is the most common reason bulbs flower once and then stop.
| When to plant | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| September | Daffodils, crocuses, grape hyacinths, camassias, winter windflowers, summer snowflakes | Daffodils like to go in early, by the end of September if possible |
| October | Alliums, lilies, and any daffodils you missed | Lilies can also go in during spring |
| November | Tulips | Planting tulips late, once it's cold, helps them avoid a fungal disease called tulip fire |
| February to March | Snowdrops and winter aconites, 'in the green' | Bought or divided just after flowering, with leaves on; they establish better than dry bulbs |
